EMMA: "Artisans for Artisans" in craft beer canning

EMMA srl is an Italian company specialising in filling machines for cans, with an artisanal approach that makes it an ideal partner for small breweries. We interviewed Eng. Federico Cavallin to explore their product offer, focused on efficient and tailor-made canning.

Engineer Cavallin, EMMA presents itself as a company of "artisans for artisans". Could you tell us about the company’s philosophy and its focus on the beer industry?

We are an Italian company that designs and produces filling machines for cans, designed especially for small and medium productions typical of craft breweries. We converse on an equal footing with producers, offering personalised solutions and a turnkey service, with training and direct assistance. We have numerous customers in the world of craft beer, and we encourage those interested to contact them for references: it is our way of guaranteeing reliability and closeness.

The heart of your offer is canning. What are the main features of your can fillers?

Fillers are the essential tool for filling and closing cans efficiently. Compared to other Italian producers, we are the only ones offering atmospheric filling for carbonated products too, such as beer. This avoids traditional isobaric pressurisation, making the machines faster, easier to clean, compact and convenient. It is a technology already known abroad but somewhat innovative here, which keeps carbonation without extra complications.

In addition to filling machines, what other complementary machines do you offer for a production line?

We cover the entire automatic line for cans: depalletisers to handle incoming pallets, rinsers for cleaning, labelling machines, stampers for dates and batches and in-line weighing systems for quality control, discarding cans with incorrect weight. These options increase productivity for those who need economies of scale, but everything remains modular and suitable for artisanal companies.

How do these machines fit in terms of automation, for example in Industry 4.0?

All the machines have a proprietary database that interfaces with external management systems, facilitating the exchange of data for traceability. For more structured lines, you can connect them to SCADA or synoptics to monitor production. In addition, we offer standard remote assistance through a secure external server, which manages communication without cyber risks for the customer.

Finally, an even more current aspect: how do your solutions contribute to energy savings, in line with Industry 5.0?

The machines are efficient and single-phase, with low electrical absorption. For a machine of 1000 cans/hour, the maximum electrical power absorbed is 1KW, less than a hairdryer or a vacuum cleaner. This reduces operating costs without sacrificing quality, ideal for craft breweries wanting sustainability and simplicity.
