Crealis: innovative crown caps for craft beers

PE.DI, part of the Crealis group since 2021, is a company specialised in the production of high-tech crown caps, with a focus on craft beer and classic method sparkling wine. Matteo Zaccaria, general manager of Pe.Di, explains how the company has evolved into a global player, maintaining flexibility and customer focus.

Engineer Zaccaria, can you present Pe.Di and its role within the Crealis group, particularly in the brewing sector?
Pe.Di was founded in 1982 as a family business specialising in crown caps for the second fermentation of classic sparkling wine, a product that requires high precision. Over time, we have become a leader in this sector, achieving an 86% export rate, with a presence in markets such as France, the United States, South America, South Africa and Australia. In the brewing sector, we target craft producers who are looking for effective caps to preserve the quality of beer, a delicate product where oxidation is the number one enemy.

Let's talk about your flagship product, the crown cap with Oxysorb seal. What makes it unique for craft breweries?
Our Oxysorb seal cap (see box) is revolutionary because it combines two effects: an oxygen barrier and scavenger action. Oxygen is critical for beer: it alters the organoleptic properties and reduces shelf life. The Oxysorb seal, thanks to a high dosage polymeric compound, captures the oxygen present in the headspace of the bottle, preventing the unwanted evolution of the product, the so-called scavenger effect. In addition, once this effect is exhausted, it continues to protect the beer from the entry of external oxygen, even under conditions of varying temperature or pressure.

How does this technical advantage translate for craft breweries?
For craft breweries, Oxysorb is a strategic ally. Craft beer often focuses on complex and distinctive flavours that can be compromised by oxidation. With Oxysorb we guarantee optimal storage, keeping aromas and taste as close as possible to the original product.

Is your focus on innovation also reflected in other aspects, such as sustainability?

Very much so! As part of the Crealis Group, we publish an annual sustainability report and we are reducing the carbon footprint of our processes. In terms of new products, in October we will be presenting a new plastic-free seal, which responds to the growing demand for ecological solutions.

Let's talk about customer service. How do you support breweries, especially smaller breweries, that have specific needs?

Despite joining an international group, we have kept our family approach that has always distinguished us: responsiveness, flexibility and customer service. We are dynamic and close to craft breweries, which often have limited productions and need quick support. For example, a brewery that wants a cap for a special beer can count on us for testing, consulting and tailor-made solutions. Our experience results in unique expertise. We not only produce caps, but solutions that "guard" the product, ensuring that it reaches the consumer exactly as the brewer made it.
